So I was reading on the subject of little/big endian bit order conventions and apparently they got their names from a satire in which a civil war broke out over how to open boiled eggs.

"It is computed that eleven thousand persons have at several times suffered death, rather than submit to break their [boiled] eggs at the smaller end"
