For some of you out there this guide might be helpful as a general direction of how to increase your performance in games. Applying all these tweaks may take about an hour or two(defragmentation excluded). Its a huge guide, I know that myself, but every tip may increase your performance. I do not promise a specific value regarding the increase of frames per second (for example at least +20 FPS) because there is just no guarantee for it. I've never had FPS problems, but did everything mentioned below and went from 400 to 500 FPS. For some people one tweak mentioned in this guide may increase the FPS heavily, for some people every tweak might be needed, I'm just trying to cover up the whole spectrum of possibilities to increase the performance.
This list is also in no specific order besides the categories. Before trying any of these solutions, change your ingame settings to low [click me] AND/OR your driver settings. Both, NVidia and AMD have a control panel that allows you to adjust Gaming quality/performance settings.I also do not take responsibility for anything YOU mess up, the tweaks explained here are SAFE. Do everything at your own risk, a brain is always more useful than a bunch of programs or a guy telling you what to tweak. I'm grateful for any tips/improvements/other ways to tweak FPS/ regarding my guide and especially my English as it isn't my native language.

Setting up Windows

 

 
As you may know Windows itself comes with a lot of features and visuals that you actually do not need. Visual effects might look cool, you might save some euros concerning electricity costs with the default energy options, you might need the index once in a month. But you should keep in mind that this decreases the performance of everything else. Most settings are accessible through the control panel.

Power options
Where?
Control Panel -> System and Security -> Power Options

Why?
Sometimes Windows messes up with the balancing between performance and energy. This tweaks some settings, for example setting the minimum processor state to 100%.
 
 
Advanced System Settings
Where?
Control Panel -> System and Security -> System -> Advanced System Settings
Guide?
- Go to the Tab "Remote". Uncheck "Allow RA connections to this computer", check "Don't allow connections" below.
- Go to the Tab "Advanced". Open up "Performance Settings". Go to the first Tab. Check "Adjust for best performance" or go through the list by yourself.
- Go to the Tab "Advanced".Open up "Performance Settings". The second Tab "Advanced" lets you change the Virtual Memory Windows is using. Click on Change, choose the drive and change the settings below. I use 1,5x of my RAM, some people don't use Virtual Memory at all, its a perfervid discussed topic, you gotta make your own decision here.
Why?
Remote Assistance can be very useful when you need them. But, most of the time you don't and it can be easily exploited by another person. The Performance Settings have no need for clarification I guess.


Homegroup
Where?
Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Homegroup
Guide?
- Click on "Leave Homegroup".
- Go to "Change advanced sharing settings". Turn everything off except Network Discovery.
Why?
Unnecessary background Feature, Saves RAM


Task Bar / Start Menu / Sound
Where?
Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization
Guide?
- Go to "Change Sound Effects" and select the Sound Scheme "No Sounds"
- Go to "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties". Uncheck "Use Aero Peek to preview the desktop" and go to the Start Menu Tab. Uncheck the 2 boxes below.

Disable unnecessary services
Where?
Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools -> Services
Guide?
Now..this is a bit tricky. I don't know which Services you require and which you don't. Just google them and you will find out if you need them or not. You can always enable them again, so don't fear trying out to disable them. Just do not disable them without knowing their purpose, it can crash your Windows! Tip: Open up msconfig, go the the Tab "Services" and check "Hide all Microsoft Services". This will show you all custom services running, disable unnecessary ones.
[SIDE NOTE: DO YOU THINK I SHOULD ADD A SERVICE LIST?]


Disable unused Windows features
Where?
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows features on or off
Guide?
Simple: Uncheck everything you do not need! For example XPS, Media Features, Tablet, Games, Indexing Service. Keep in mind that you need Internet Explorer for a lots of other programs.
Why?
Unnecessary Features, Saves RAM


Uninstall programs you never use
Where?
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features or Uninstaller
Guide?
I would personally recommend using IObits Uninstaller as it does not only uninstall the program, but also removes leftover files and registry keys.
Why?
Saves Space, probably turns off unnecessary processes


Disable Widgets/Gadgets/Sidebars
Where?
Well...how am I supposed to know this?
Guide?
Depends on the Sidebars you have.
Why?
Saves RAM


Check Windows for corrupt files
Where?
CMD Window
Guide?
- Type in chkdsk /f /r
- Type in sfc /scannow
Why?
Healthier hard drive


Clean the Context Menu
Where?
I recommend CCleaner for doing so.
Guide?
- Go to Tools -> Startup -> Remove unnecessary entries
- You can also give it a try through regedit. Read this article.
Why?

 Keeping up to date

 

 
I've seen a lot of people complaining about lags, but not keeping up to date their drivers/software. You shouldn't expect the best performance if you are using software from 2001. Especially when it comes to scripting for example the latest Framework becomes even more important to you. Try to keep everything up to date.

Go to Control Panel -> System and Security -> Windows Update. Check for updates, install them, restart your computer.

• Chipset / BIOS / etc

Software

• Adobe Air
• Internet Explorer
• DirectX
• Microsoft .Net Framework

Note: I personally recommend the use of 'Driver Booster', but you should NOT let it automatically update the drivers, this will most likely result in a BsoD. Check which Drivers are needed, MANUALLY search for them and install the right version. Remember: A system restore point doesn't cost you any money.
 
 
 
 

 

Tweaks and Cleaning up

 

LoL Cleaner

Nice tool that allows you to clean your LoL Directory from anything that's not needed anymore. Unfortunately I can't link it as it's most likely redirecting to other scripting forums. Google it.

LoL Updater

Tweaks LoL with some DLLs and stuff, I personally never used it, but it got a lot of attention in the forums and it seems to be quite effective.

Advanced System Care

Advanced System Care is a software developed by IObit which is quite known for its quality products. It fixes registry errors, cleans up the drive and tweaks some settings. Simply download and install the free version. To get the Premium version which you will actually need now you OF COURSE don't google "advanced system care serial", copy a code, disconnect from the internet and activate the program, you buy it. Then open up the settings and check premium features as well as do other adjustments.
Now perform an almost full system scan, the defragmentation is not needed. If you are done fixing, cleaning and performing uninstall the program, you wont need it anymore.

DiskMax

DiskMax is a disk cleanup and Windows performance optimization application by KoshyJohn. Its small, but quite effective, install it, open it up and chose the Complete Scan. The program will now ask you anytime it wants to clean something, the most important ones are: User Assist, Windows Update, Event Logs and Prefetch Optimizations (which can take a while to complete), definitely let DiskMax delete them! After finishing you can, once again, uninstall the program.

CCleaner + CCEnhancer

Piriform's CCleaner serves the same purpose as DiskMax, but covers up some regions DiskMax is not cleaning/optimizing (while DiskMax does the same with CCleaner). CCEnhancer is...well guess what, a Tool that enhances the regions CCleaner is covering, adding hundreds of tools to the program. Install CCleaner, then download CCEnhancer, open it and click on "Download Latest". After upgrading open up CCleaner, it may take a while to load. The first Tab is the Cleaner Tab, anon divided into a Windows and an Application Tab. I recommend checking everything but "Wipe Free Space" in the Windows Tab. The Application Tab is a bit more trickier. You can check EVERYTHING, yes everything, but don't clean yet, click on Analyze. A large list will appear now. Have a look at the Tab list at the left and at the results. Is there anything you want to keep? I for example don't want my Skype Messages to be deleted, therefore I go to "Internet" and uncheck "Skype Messages". I haven't experienced anything bad while checking everything in the"Windows"-Part of the application Tab, I recommend cleaning everything, but do everything at your own risk.

Once cleaned open the Registry Part, check for errors, solve them, finished.

Now go to "Tools". The first thing we want to look at is Startup. The Tab "Windows" and "Scheduled Tasks" is important, disable everything you don't need. If you are unsure what a process does, google it and you will find suggestions and explanations. Then go to "System Restore" and delete all System Restore points except the last one before you applied the tweaks mentioned in this thread, just as a safety if you messed something up. If you are done, close the program, I personally recommend keeping CCleaner, its quite a nice, small tool and its getting updates frequently.

Smart Defrag

Tool does what its made for. And even more. You cannot only chose to defragment, but also to Fully Optimize and Prioritize Files. I would recommend doing both. This may take between 5 minutes and 48 hours, depending on your drive.

Another awesome thing is the Boot-Time Defrag. It's defragmenting system files and the master file table at startup.

MSI Afterburner

MSI Afterburner lets you take control over your graphics card regarding fans and clocks. If you experience lagging it may be because of an overheat. Have a look at the temperatures, adjust your fans if needed. If your temperatures are fine try to overclock your GPU. This is the last possibility to increase the FPS I would recommend though, so try everything else out first.

Unpark CPU

Disables unnecessary features, you don't even have to install it. Quite cool, check everything you do not need, the program also comes with a built-in rollback option.

Game Booster

Program does what it says. Might cause a very nice FPS increase. Closes Services and programs that are unnecessary while gaming. Pretty neat for squeezing out some FPS of your GPU.

Other Options
